On April 21st 2015, Google implemented a new condition for ranking websites when searching from a mobile device. Sites that are not mobile compatible/mobile responsive will now be pushed down on the search engine results page (SERP). Those sites that are mobile compatible are now pushed to the top, even if they are less relevant to the search. As a growing majority of searches are now done from mobile devices, this change is important to take note of.
Here are a few FAQs we found interesting:
Q: Does this affect all searches?
A: No, as of now, this does not affect your google ranking when being searched for from a non mobile device.
Q: How you know if your site is up to Google’s mobile ready standards?
A: Google has a simple and quick tool for you to check, which even lets you know what elements of your site are not compatible and what steps you can take to fix the issues.
Another thing which can increase your visibility on SERPs is having a mobile app.
Please note, if you do have a mobile App, keep track of the apps rating as this will affect its visibility on SERPs.
Our key takeaways from all of this: if your website is not mobile responsive, and you do not have a mobile application, your website may drop below not just the mobile responsive websites, but also any apps that may be applicable to the search.
